Lacquerer
Kanazawa, Japan
A moment held in lacquer
- Wakaba transforms memories of nature and place into lacquerware
- She develops unique matte finishes with washi paper and mineral powder
- Her decorative techniques include mother-of-pearl and eggshell inlay
Wakaba Tanaka is a lacquer artist based in Kanazawa, a city deeply intertwined with Japan's craft traditions. After her graduate studies, she honed her style via postgraduate research at the Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo, a craft workshop known for training world-class craft artists. Wakaba creates functional lacquerware such as tea utensils, tableware and cutlery with detailed decorative motifs drawn from the natural landscapes of her childhood. She uses traditional techniques such as mother-of-pearl inlay and eggshell inlay, while layering washi paper and tonoko powder to achieve textured matte finishes, preserving the paper's natural wrinkles to achieve an organic, unrepeatable surface. “For me, every piece is a quiet exchange, carrying the memory of a season or landscape to whoever receives it,” she says.

INTERVIEW
Lacquer can be glossy like a mirror, matte like stone, or textured like fabric when layered with washi. I was captivated by these many faces of lacquer work, and its slow, patient process suited my natural way of working.
I often use mother-of-pearl and eggshell. Both are outer shells that protect food and are parts we normally discard. I find it wonderful that in lacquer work, these overlooked fragments become the material itself and gain a second life.
My practice is rooted in nature and natural landscapes. I am inspired by the rich scenery of my hometown in Kitahiroshima, where I spent my childhood, as well as landscapes, plants I come across on daily walks, and the shifting of the seasons. I translate these vivid memories into my pieces through the medium of lacquer.
I hope those who see and hold my items can feel the warmth and texture of lacquer and appreciate its quality of being both powerful and delicate at the same time. If my pieces can bring even a small touch of colour and richness to everyday life, that makes me very happy.
