Emotions in motion

  • Monica is inspired by Nature
  • To her, working with clay creates a special alchemy
  • In her practice she combines many different techniques

After studying at the National Institute of Art in Padova, Monica Perin attended the school of ceramics in Cadoneghe, a famous centre of excellence, where she learned, and then taught, different techniques for working clay. Modelling and painting clay, in her opinion, gives a sense of freedom, and the result of her process always amazes and surprises. With time, her artworks have become more and more abstract, each piece born from a feeling. Monica believes in Dostoyevsky's quote that “Beauty will save the world.” For the same reason, she loves Giotto and Michelangelo and their unique way of representing beauty and harmony in a sublime way.

How do you translate inspiration into artwork?
Working with clay is a journey and the destination is a surprise, as it depends on synergies between my inspiration and the materials. Clay is a natural and friendly element that makes me feel good and helps me to communicate my feelings.
Which is your favourite technique?
To model objects I use coiling, wheel and slab building techniques. To decorate and paint them, I choose according to the subject: glazes, raku, crystalline materials and engobe, an ancient technique that uses raw material and some magic powders.
How do other artists influence your activity?
Observing and studying different artworks is always a way to continue to learn. I am always amazed by the human ability to create and communicate. Many artists gave me ideas to explore new techniques.
What is your main source of inspiration?
The sea, its habitat and seabed, but also woods, trees and their trunks: Nature is my muse and my best teacher. With my works I always try to represent and interpret its multifaceted, surprising expressions.
