Eugenia Querci, an art historian who found her true calling in ceramics, brings a scholarly yet deeply personal approach to her craft. In her Rome-based studio called Fuoco di Terra, she shapes ceramic sculptures that raise many themes. "I see working with clay as similar to turning the pages of a book. Each creation tells a silent yet evocative story," she confides. Her works embody a profound connection to history, nature and human emotion which she expresses through a variety of techniques and finishes, including through leaving marks on the surface of her pieces. Eugenia showcases her ceramic sculptures and vases at well-known Italian artistic events, including Rome Art Week and Arte in Nuvola.

What led you from art history to ceramics?
History of art, art critique and ceramics coexist in my life in a harmonious way. I feel that working with clay has something in common with the process of writing, as they are both ways to reflect on life and the passing of time, although ceramics have more immediacy and unpredictability.
How does your academic background influence your creations?
Keeping in mind my studies, I always try to maintain a high level of quality and to choose unconventional solutions. Also, my knowledge in art history constantly reminds me to be straight-forward and avoid any excesses when it comes to details.
What emotions do you seek to convey in your work?
Every single object or sculpture arises from a specific state of mind and emotion, depending on my everyday life. Whatever the original feeling, I always try to express equilibrium and delicacy in my works.
What is the most rewarding aspect of working with clay?
If you know some fundamental rules, clay is a very flexible material that allows the expression of subtle feelings and thoughts. It also permits me to be very direct and physical in expressing myself.
