Marina Gozzi creates distinctive ceramic sculptures inspired by classical forms that she reinterprets through her deeply personal artistic lens. Her ceramics studio has been her creative base since the 1990s, nestled just steps from the ancient Roman Forum in the heart of the Italian capital of Rome. "My journey as a ceramicist began under the guidance of artist Siglinda Scarpa in 1979, and has since evolved through experimentation, teaching and international exhibitions," she explains. After studying in New York and returning to Rome, Marina established her studio, where she still works today. Her pieces are part of museum and private collections worldwide, from Europe to the Americas, Africa and Asia. Marina has been sharing her craft since 1982 with students of from different backgrounds.

Is your art influenced by your atelier's location?
Once a working class neighbourhood, the Monti district, where my studio is located, has deeply influenced my artistic style. Marked by history, chaos, imperfection and a vibrant sense of creativity, the environment allows for a dialogue between classical and contemporary art.
What distinguishes your approach to form?
My approach is spontaneous and intuitive. It is shaped by my curious spirit and willingness to be inspired by almost everything, from ancient architecture to everyday details. My pieces often emerge without a fixed plan, which allows the material to guide the process.
In what ways has your artistic vision evolved over time?
It evolved from functional pottery to more sculptural, expressive forms. Over the years, experimentation, teaching and international exchanges have deepened my artistic language. I now combine classical influences with a contemporary vision.
What is one thing you hope your students learn?
I hope my students carry forward a sense of freedom in the making process, a deep respect for the material and the courage to explore their own voice. I want them to have a personal connection to their craft, not just technical skills.
