Metal, motifs and meaning

Jenny Jansson makes wearable art that subverts how people think about value, turning everyday motifs into vibrant, thought provoking statements. For nearly 20 years, she worked as a project manager in business and IT. During a trip to the Collect art fair exhibition in London, Jenny stumbled across jewellery art and everything clicked. "The blend of adornment and fine art felt just right. It was a revelation," she says. Jenny left the corporate world behind, started fresh at Dalsland, a preparatory art and design school, and eventually earned both her BFA and MFA from HDK-Valand in 2023. Today, she creates earrings, necklaces and brooches using anodised aluminium, a humble metal she transforms through fearless experimentation.

INTERVIEW
I think of my work as wearable art that carefully balances adornment, storytelling and social commentary. The message matters, but the piece still needs to draw people in visually. Jewellery allows me to take up space, make a statement and hold my ground.
My work always starts with a theme or a title. From there, I pick materials that bring the story to life, often pushing unfamiliar ones to their limits by bending, burning or soaking them. It is a tango with the medium. I love transforming everyday plastic until it rivals a precious stone.
I do not focus on set techniques, but on fearless experimentation. Lately, I have been interested in anodising aluminum. It is not a fancy metal, but when once dyed, it reveals a bold, colourful layer that completely transforms its look. Suddenly, it no longer feels like aluminum.
I hope they master believing in their own artistic abilities and build a broad foundation for future work. Developing skills and being present with the craft is important, but learning how to anchor those abilities within yourself is what gives you courage. That is an essential skill for art, craft and life.
