Letting the grain shine

  • Gavin designs and makes contemporary wooden furniture
  • He loves to explore new techniques and experiment with raw materials
  • Bespoke commissions represent a significant part of his work

Having spent his childhood in his father’s workshop, Gavin Coyle knew very early on that he would be using his hands to earn a living. “I remember making a small side table at the age of 13. I was enthralled that I could actually create a 3D object from my thoughts and ideas.” Desiring to progress in his chosen craft and explore a personal narrative, he first developed his skills at the City & Guilds of London Institute, and then took a BA in Furniture Design & Craftsmanship at Buckinghamshire New University. Since opening his own workshop in 2008, Gavin has focused on creating functional objects with beauty and longevity in mind. At the same time, he is intent on allowing the inherent qualities of the material to shine. Gavin is strongly committed to sustainability and strives to optimise production, making sure that waste is reused or recycled.

In what way do you update traditional furniture making?
My work explores the interaction between traditional techniques and the modern context. I innovate and reinterpret in both design and manufacturing processes.
Can you remember your first commission?
My first set brief was a writing desk for an author. I discovered that interpreting the client’s needs and personality was a new skill to nurture, resulting in an object that gave meaning to both myself and my client.
Is the area where you work stimulating for your practice?
My workshop is in Walthamstow, East London, the birthplace of William Morris, a pioneer of the Art and Crafts movement. The local artistic community is dedicated to keeping the spirit of this movement alive.
Do you think that craftsmanship has an enduring value?
As long as there are people who appreciate objects that are well made, I believe there will always be a place for contemporary craft furniture. Over time, these objects hold memories and become things we cherish and, hopefully, things we keep as heirlooms.
