Creating objects that do not yet exist

  • Francesco combines conceptual design with the precision of craftsmanship
  • His pieces are built to interact with people and environments
  • Product design principles guide his creative process

Francesco Galeazzi inherited his workshop in Ferrara from his grandfather, who was a carpenter and his first teacher. Francesco obtained a Bachelor’s degree in industrial product design from Politecnico di Milano and a Master's degree in product design from Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan. "The academic approach to design was fundamental to implementing my ideas and projects once away at my studio," he explains. In his one-off artworks or small production series, Francesco combines manual dexterity and design concepts to make each object come alive, communicating and participating in everyday life. Collaboration with other artisans is at the heart of his ethos, and he enjoys sharing creativity and skills, to create unique lamps, armchairs, small storage furniture, mirrors and more.

Why did you choose this craft?
To me, creating objects and new forms is a real need. I imagine new objects that people would like to have in their homes, objects that do not exist yet. I am just starting out, but when I see people looking at my works with interest I feel great satisfaction. Even a compliment or an unexpected smile is precious to me.
When did you decide to open up your own workshop?
I started producing furniture objects in my grandfather’s workshop in 2017, and I am now renovating it. I would like to create a more professional studio open to the public and a place where people can share visions on artistic and cultural issues.
What is the inspiration behind your works?
Art, history, nature, my childhood. Many ideas come from the architecture, materials, shapes and colours that surround me. I have always collaborated with Italian craftspeople and companies that gave me fresh vision and inspiration. My dream is to create a new slow design, made in Italy.
What does 'artfully made' mean to you?
It means an artefact with a special appeal that distinguishes itself from the ordinary. When an object conveys a feeling, a perceptible intrinsic value, then it becomes unique and appreciable by those who interact with it.
