Evoke the Baroque with extravagance

  • Giuseppe designs and crafts unmistakable pieces
  • His production is marked by curved lines
  • He developed his own method to work wood

Raised in the workshop of his father, a restorer, Giuseppe Bruno also trained as a wood sculptor to satisfy his own creative expression. These two paths he merged by founding MobiliStorti ("crooked furniture"). He creates wooden furniture, sculptures, lamps, in which he combines his aptitude for research into shapes and different types of wood with his historical sensitivity. Giuseppe has developed his own method of adapting wood to his design vision. The pieces of wood are first shaped and fitted into each other, then sculpted as a single unit. To Giuseppe technique is a means to an end, and what matters the most are ideas and harmony. “With my creations I try to bring nature back into homes,” he says. This ambition co-exists with wanting to create surreal furniture with irony, influenced by Piedmontese Baroque.

Giuseppe Bruno is an expert artisan: he began his career in 1992

INTERVIEW

I am thrilled by the wood itself, which is beautiful and alive. Since I was a child I was seduced by trees and I am fascinated by ancient materials, with a story behind them. For me, the recovery of wood is important: the felled trunks, destined to be burned, and old furniture.

Yes, super niche for a few, particular clients: we choose each other. I cannot work if there is no mutual understanding. It is not easy to get my work accepted at trade fairs and industry events because it is rather extravagant production.

Having grown up in my father's antiques and restorer's shop, I learned about antique furniture. I love the 15th and 16th centuries, the way aesthetics and function were combined. I try to bring some of this back into the present, along with the Piedmontese Baroque, a style I pay homage to with irony, playfully.

In my work, I set myself a goal, like a beacon: to succeed at least once a year in doing something I have never done before. New challenges always. In general, continuous research and my autonomy are fundamental for me, as without the one there is no other.
