Claire Royer

Ceramicist

A dream come true

  • Claire gave up her law career for ceramics
  • Her pieces blend function and decoration
  • She cherishes the “Made in Luxembourg” label

This is an inspiring story of a corporate law professional who realised, as she turned 40, that her successful financial status was not bringing her joy and fulfilment. Claire Royer finally left her job for ceramics, her true passion. “As a child, I loved playing with earth and my hands but I come from a family where reaching the highest level of studies was important, so I did that.” Toulouse-born, the ceramicist opened her studio in September 2019 in Luxembourg, where she has lived for over 15 years. Her pieces such as bowls, cups and jars in stoneware and porcelain are intended for daily use. Clients are local but also from neighbouring countries and a new project with a starred restaurant positively indicates that Claire made the right choice.

How has life changed from law to crafts?
I feel free and able to channel my creativity. I am grateful for my past career in business law and finance but it just did not make me happy. I felt something was missing, I needed to find my purpose and I finally had the courage at 40 to change.
Why is the “Made in Luxembourg” label so important to you?
I am very attached to Luxembourg. The label proves that my pieces are made locally, but it goes beyond this. On a personal level, it accentuates my belonging here and a form of gratitude and recognition for the opportunities Luxembourg has given me.
What techniques do you use?
I took a CAP (Certificat d’Aptitude Professionnelle) course in throwing clay and work with standstone and porcelain. Porcelain is more demanding but I love both. I prepare the glazes and use natural materials that are safe as my pieces are for daily use.
What is your advise on switching careers?
It is so easy to get trapped in living a life that we are not perfectly in harmony with. If you have a passion go for it, make your dream come true. There will be hurdles but choosing your heart’s choice will bring serenity, a sense of purpose and contribution.
