In Luxembourg, Pascale Putz shapes thread the way others shape clay. Trained first in pottery, she found in patchwork, and later embroidery, a path she has never left. A distance-learning course in England introduced her to textile design, and online courses later opened the door to the sculptural work she had long hoped for. Moving between machine-worked macramé and hand-knotted linen, Pascale explores organic forms inspired by her garden and by nature. Her work also engages with environmental concerns and the evolving role of women. Curious and demanding of herself, she lets the material surprise her as much as she shapes it. "I like to test how far a simple thread can go!" she shares.
INTERVIEW
My mother and grandmothers were seamstresses and embroiderers, and I grew up with a deep respect for handmade work. After gaining experience in knitting, crochet and ceramics, I turned to patchwork, then trained in England in embroidery and design, before gradually opening up to sculptural work.
I work with macramé yarn and a technique in which tension and gesture create the form, much like on a potter's wheel. When working by hand, I use natural linen, sometimes blended with metallic thread, to bring movement to an ancient technique.
I start with an idea in mind, make a quick sketch, and then let myself be surprised by the material, which has a will of its own. I am drawn to organic forms, partly because of the limitations of working with circular shaping.
My participation in the Strassen Biennale in 2024 was decisive: all of my pieces were bought by other artists, which gave me real confidence. I realised that this daily work, done with passion, amounted to a genuine professional practice.
