Carolyn Genders is renowned for her colourful sculptures, crafted from white earthenware clay which she adorns with intricate abstract painted surfaces. Shaped by her upbringing in a family deeply passionate about travel and diverse cultures, Carolyn's work resonates with a diverse array of impressions and experiences that transcend geographic boundaries. While she leans towards leaving the interpretation of her work open, Carolyn is deeply committed to finding the right words to share her passion for ceramics and creative expression in general. As the author of two books on ceramics, numerous articles, and a frequent lecturer, she actively contributes to the ceramic community, inspiring others with her expertise and unwavering curiosity and dedication to her craft.

INTERVIEW

My ceramic work is made using only a few techniques. I find this self-imposed restriction demands more creativity yet allows me more freedom. It also requires a high level of skill. I use white earthenware clay, employing coiling and building techniques. Surface treatments are limited to vitreous slip or terra sigillata for colour.

I prefer vitreous slip for its versatility and painterly qualities. It blends seamlessly with clay, offering the immediacy of paint while becoming an integral part of the surface. Whether creating subtle watercolour-like effects or rich, opaque textures, vitreous slip allows for expressive layering and rich textural surfaces. Plus, with only one firing required, it results in a beautiful silky matte finish.

Just start. I opened my first studio in 1980 after completing my BA at Brighton and before starting my MA at Goldsmiths. At the beginning of each year, I told myself, 'Let's give it a try for a year and see where it goes.' Now, after more than 40 years in the field, I can hardly imagine a more fulfilling career.

In my books, Pattern, Colour and Form, and Sources of Inspiration, I offer a wealth of images featuring natural and man-made objects to ignite creativity in struggling artists. These books serve as invaluable resources for artists of all levels, providing insight into the creative process and serving as a visual treasure trove of inspiration.
