The beauty of pattern

  • Bianca learned the secrets of shoemaking from local artisans
  • She has created shoes for theatre and ballet in Milan
  • Her shoes are embellished with laser-cut details

Bianca Georgescu has been passionate about arts since childhood. After initially studying piano for ten years, Bianca discovered the craft she now practises while studying fashion design at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Looking back at her early years in shoemaking, it was her proactive attitude, fuelled by the desire to expand her knowledge, which prompted her to seek out workshops and mentors to train her. She enriched her expertise with the experience she gained in Milan, Italy, studying for her master's degree at Accademia di Belle Arte di Brera for a year. Once she returned home, Bianca opened her own studio, where she is dedicated to creating the perfect pair of shoes for each customer.

Why did you choose this craft?
I was searching for an activity that would fill me with adrenaline and make me work all day without feeling fatigue. It happened when I discovered the art of shoemaking and I first saw one of my sketches coming to life. My heart was rushing and I knew that was it.
How does your local area influence your craft?
I am a millennial, coming from a post-communist country with little opportunities for artists. I believe that these circumstances helped me develop a passion for exploring and innovating, whilst allowing me to be grateful every time I can apply these innovations to footwear.
What did your time in Italy teach you?
I went there with an Erasmus scholarship. While in Milan, I was also able to take part in the process of making shoes for theatre and ballet dancers around the world, at an Italian company. This changed my perspective about craftsmanship and the meaning of perfection. It opened my mind and my spirit.
How do you mix tradition with innovation in your creations?
Innovation is a part of my work, from unusual combinations of materials to unique patterns or techniques. For me, tradition means to respect every step of shoemaking and to deliver the high quality that a handmade product implies. I combine innovative design with comfort and longeivity.
