Born and raised in Argentina, Álvaro Cuitiño Fragapan has developed a saddlery practice shaped by the Pampas culture. As a child, he dreamt of having his own equestrian equipment shop, so he taught himself leatherworking and saddlery techniques. In 2007, Álvaro opened his workshop Talabartería Lapacho, where he creates a variety of leather goods, equestrian gear and accessories. He sources the leather himself, travelling twice a year away from his hometown and hand picking the high-quality organically tanned materials. "I enjoy every step of the making process," he says. "I build strong connections with my clients, especially when crafting saddles, because I aim to provide a bespoke and safe riding experience," he says.

INTERVIEW
Gaucho traditions are part of my DNA as an Argentinian. I have always been involved in traditional horse riding activities. These traditions inspire and motivate me to create leather goods.
I start by identifying the saddle the client seeks, as it depends on the horse and the purpose. I make saddles for both competitions and leisure, with the same attention to quality in selecting the materials. I painstakingly follow each step of the crafting and stitching process for everything I do.
We live in a world ruled by speed, fast fashion and industrial production. My goal is the opposite: I craft timeless items that honour tradition and celebrate what is unique and handmade, highlighting human craftsmanship.
In addition to my regular production stream, I create custom pieces. My clients are given the option to pick colours, materials and buckles. When making a saddle, I strive to make my client's equestrian experience unique by encouraging them to visit the workshop and watch the crafting process.
