Knife maker

Forged between memory and steel

  • Yann creates traditional knives and works on contemporary bespoke commissions
  • He specialises in historical blade reproduction using ore reduction and bloomery steel making
  • He collaborates with museums and castles, as well as Michelin-starred chefs

Before committing to knife making, Yann Petit worked in psychiatric care. In the late 2000s, a return to a childhood fascination with fire, iron and transformation marked a turning point in his career. Yann trained with a master craftsman, making traditional local knives and historical blades. His work drew the attention of Michelin-starred chefs, for whom he now makes cutlery and kitchen knives. Yann also developed expertise in historical reproduction, including ore reduction to produce bloomery steel, the closest modern equivalent to medieval ironmaking. "From contemporary commissions to exacting replicas, my work demands extreme precision," he says. Yann also shares his craft through teaching and medieval forging demonstrations. "Forging is only the beginning. Far more time is spent on assembly, finishing and polishing," he explains.

Yann Petit is an expert artisan: he began his career in 2006 and he started teaching in 2018.

INTERVIEW

My interest stems from my childhood. I have always been fascinated by fire, iron and transformation, striking bits of metal on railway tracks just to see what would happen. The physical reaction between force, heat and material stayed with me for years, and eventually became impossible to ignore.

I first trained with a master craftsman in 2006 after a career in psychiatric care. What started as a return to a childhood fascination with fire and metal quickly became a practice. I opened my workshop the following year, initially part-time, before fully committing to knife making.

I work on bespoke pieces ranging from contemporary knives to historical reproductions. The level of precision is always extremely high, whether I am recreating a blade that must be indistinguishable from an original or making a kitchen knife used daily by a chef. It is demanding work, but seeing my pieces in museums or used in fine dining is deeply rewarding.

I value extreme precision and purpose, as well as transmission: sharing how these tools are made and showing that forging is only a small part of the process. Finishing and polishing are just as crucial.
