  • Sourabh's artistic practice moves between botanical sculpture, painting and ceramics
  • His work captures the emotional language of plants
  • He approaches making through experimentation and observation

Raised in a small town in India, where artisans formed an integral part of everyday life, artist and botanical sculptor Sourabh Gupta grew up surrounded by craftsmanship. “Everything was made by hand, everything was art,” he recalls. Among these early memories, he remembers a small garden at school. "It was the only thing that evolved over time, which first sparked my fascination with the botanical world," he explains. Although Sourabh first turned to architecture and later studied interior design in New York, his desire to create eventually led him towards a more instinctive and experimental practice. Working from a small studio in the city, he began practising with simple tools and materials, exploring forms that could emerge from the limited space around him. Today, Sourabh sculpts delicate botanical pieces across multiple mediums.

Sourabh Gupta is a rising star: he began his career in 2018 and he started teaching in 2023.

INTERVIEW

I grew up in a very small town in India. Stepping outside gave me the opportunity to observe shoemakers, embroiderers and fabric dyers. I would stop to watch people working, collecting scraps of material to bring home and to create my own art with it.

I was constantly experimenting and observing people. Wherever I was, I had to find my own way of making. Out of necessity, I learned to create. Looking back, I see that my real education was through observation, experimentation and problem-solving.

I am interested in several mediums and dimensions, and throughout the day I like to move between different forms of expression. Some ideas come spontaneously, while others return after many years. My process involves a lot of prototyping: I usually begin with painting or drawing before creating mock-ups and studies at full scale.

My work explores the expressive and emotional world of nature. I have always been fascinated by details and the honesty found in natural elements. I am interested in capturing the essence of flowers, their fragility, movement, texture and scent. Through my work, I try to reconnect people with the sensory and emotional presence of the botanical world.
