A paper immersion into nature
- Pauline trained at Valence École Supérieure d’Art et Design and Strasbourg Arts Décoratifs
- A wall frame piece of work can take her six weeks to make
- She is commissioned mainly by individuals and interior designers
Since 2019, Pauline Faure has been transforming paper into intricate, colourful 3D works of art. She meticulously cuts, shapes and assembles the material into delicate ecosystems populated by plants, flowers, animals, the aquatic world, even imagery creatures. Her sculptures are created entirely with paper, never with any support or base. "Cabinets of curiosities, natural history museums and the Impressionists, particularly their sensitivity to light and colour, have long inspired me," says Pauline. The driving force of her practice is her aim to reveal the hidden beauty of nature, by inviting viewers to rediscover the details nestled within it. "I would hope my paper artwork can reconcile us with nature, its fragility and resilience," she shares. Pauline's studio is filled with tools, drawers and containers for paper cuttings, and paper storage units organised into reams of colour palettes.

INTERVIEW
My first encounters with paper as an artistic medium came during my studies, particularly through pop-up books. I was fascinated by the transformation of a flat material into three-dimensional form. It was also during this time that I discovered the poetic work of Peter Callesen.
I use mainly a scalpel, a cutting plotter and precision tweezers. I repurpose many tools, particularly those used in ceramics, and I create new ones according to my needs. To fully develop a sculpted universe, I may use around ten different small tools.
A client wrote a text about her experience of hiking and what she feels during those moments, the elements she notices, and the impressions that stay with her. Based on this text, she gave me complete creative freedom to create a bespoke piece for her. It was a beautiful creative journey.
It would be to reinterpret one of Monet’s great Water Lilies paintings from the Orangerie Museum, recreating it in paper and through the lens of my own artistic universe.
