Edizioni Precarie was born in Palermo in 2013 from the mind of architect Carmela Dacchille, though other contributors have joined the project over time, too. "My aim was to reveal and rediscover the beauty of the simple things of daily life," explains Carmela. This mindset has defined her approach in repurposing paper normally used in the markets to wrap meat, fish and fried food to create diaries, notebooks, writing paper, notepads and recipe books. Working in a traditional way allows the maker to reconnect with the slow rhythms and manual discipline of paper craftsmanship, which have been largely replaced by digital procedures in recent decades.

Edizioni Precarie is also a physical place located at Via Alessandro Paternostro 75 in Palermo. It is an agile, ever-changing space, which is at once design studio and production workshop open to the public. Since 2015, it has also housed the Scuola Precaria, a place for experimentation and exchange dedicated to graphic design and artisanal design. "The focus is on observation expression through signs and forms, without too many words," says Carmela.
