Intricate paper puzzles

  • Juanita creates 3D artworks using paper, ceramic and silicone
  • She cuts, glues and folds her highly detailed pieces by hand
  • Her works are influenced by the Bauhaus movement, architecture and furniture

South African mixed media artist Juanita Oosthuizen specialises in making intricate, miniature paper artworks combined with different materials such as ceramics and silicone. Before following her passion for the creative world, she originally trained as an occupational therapist. Later, she pivoted to product design, creating lighting and stationery from polypropylene. "I wanted to move into fine art and work with a more environmentally conscious material," she says. Juanita began experimenting with paper in 2013, founding the practice she continues today. Working primarily in a monochromatic palette accented by occasional pops of colour, her compositions frequently feature a signature motif: a collection of 18 original chair designs.

Juanita Oosthuizen is an expert artisan: she began her career in 2013.

INTERVIEW

A friend of mine was heartbroken after dropping her grandmother’s precious porcelain plate. I put it together, took a picture, cut the photo into pieces and simply started weaving. I gave it back, with both a woven and ceramic part.

In 2018, I won the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Award. I used my reward to spend five days with master paper artist Paul Jackson in Tel Aviv. I learned a lot about tessellation, paper qualities and folding. This experience was life-changing for me.

My work is inspired by my surroundings, and travel has profoundly shaped my practice. I live in a very small space and I save money to travel. I find my inspiration in nature, architecture and art fairs.

A lot of my ideas come at night as I am falling asleep, when life is calm. I get up at six in the morning and start working. I do not play any music while I work: the silence truly helps me concentrate.
