An obsession with sunglasses from childhood inspired Alistair Barnes to design his own. He founded Ballo with a desire to handcraft contemporary classic eyewear. "For me, wearing sunglasses filters people’s vision of the world, and is an intimate choice that shapes perceptions," he explains. As such, Ballo’s eyewear seeks to open eyes, and therefore minds, to create a brighter world in which people celebrate the precious moments of joy found through interactions with each other and nature.

The environment is a core consideration in Ballo’s material and process choices. Products are crafted using locally sourced sustainable materials. This includes fabric and wood offcuts, recycled plastic, cork and paper, and plant-based acetates. Ballo also plants a tree for every online sale made, enhancing its positive impact on the natural environment. Ballo’s artisans are trained in the required skills and knowledge to carry out the 27 processes involved in the making, presentation and packaging of every object. "Ballo's aim and hope is that every artisan will inspire a sense of pride in every process and product,” says Alistair.
