Materials sculpted for happiness

  • Jordi handcrafts furniture pieces that begin as sculptures
  • His pieces relay his belief that beauty has the power to enrich everyday life
  • He finds inspiration in the harmony of nature's organic curves and continuous transformation

After two decades as a creative director in the fashion industry, Jordi Sarrate chose to leave the corporate world in pursuit of a creative path. Since founding his studio in 2019, he has developed a distinctive artistic language where sculpture, design and craftsmanship converge. Working primarily with salvaged walnut wood, each piece is carved entirely by hand, transforming natural materials into functional sculptures that challenge conventional ideas of furniture. Jordi is guided by intuition and inspired by the harmony found in nature. He creates works that celebrate imperfection, re-using materials and the emotional connection between people and the objects they live with. His purpose is simple yet profound: to contribute to humanity by creating beautiful objects that bring happiness into everyday life.

Jordi Sarrate is a rising star: he began his career in 2019 and he started teaching in 2026.

INTERVIEW

I have never been interested in designing furniture in the conventional sense. My work begins as sculpture, where intuition and emotion guide every decision. Function appears later, almost organically. I want people to first experience the piece as an artwork and only afterwards discover its purpose. That moment of surprise questions our expectations and transforms an everyday object into something emotional, contemplative and alive.

Nature is my greatest teacher. I am fascinated by the harmony of organic curves shaped by water, wind and time, river stones, soap bubbles or the quiet movement of natural forms. I work with salvaged walnut trees from Spain, each carrying its own history and unique grain. Rather than imposing a shape, I allow the material to guide the sculpture, revealing a dialogue between the life of the tree and my own intuition.

My purpose is to contribute to humanity by creating beautiful objects that spread happiness in the world. I want my sculptures to become part of everyday life, offering moments of calm, balance and emotional connection. Beauty has the power to transform how we feel and how we inhabit our spaces. If someone lives with one of my pieces and feels a little more connected to nature, to craftsmanship or simply to themselves, then the work has fulfilled its purpose.

The value of handmade work lies in its humanity. Every sculpture is carved entirely by my own hands, without moulds or mechanical repetition. The subtle imperfections, gestures and decisions become part of the work itself. Innovation is about using traditional knowledge to create something that has never existed before. I believe the future of functional art lies in celebrating what only human hands can create.
