Jack Craig

Mixed media sculptor

Sculptural remnants rich with layers

  • Jack transforms discarded materials into mixed media sculptures
  • Before establishing his sculpture practice, he worked as an engineer
  • Hands-on experimentation lies at the heart of his work

Jack Craig treats materials as subjects of experimentation. In his Detroit studio, PVC pipes, discarded carpet, stone fragments, drizzled bronze and industrial remnants are heated, compressed, stretched and reshaped through constant testing. "Rather than working toward a fixed outcome, I push materials beyond their intended use and allow unexpected results to lead the process," he says. Jack's engineering background gives structure to a process largely shaped by exploration and discovery. He repurposes industrial and overlooked pieces, transforming them into sculptural objects that challenge assumptions about function and value. Some of his work draw inspiration from biomimicry, creating hybrid forms that feel both familiar and slightly otherworldly.

Jack Craig is a master artisan: he began his career in 2012 and he started teaching in 2013.

INTERVIEW

Working in engineering felt like being one small component in a much larger machine. I was looking for something more personal, a way to follow my own curiosity and explore ideas that felt entirely my own.

Experimentation is at the heart of everything I do. I am constantly testing materials and exposing them to conditions they are not meant to experience. I am less interested in using materials correctly and more intrigued by what happens when they behave in unexpected ways.

At the beginning of the process, I have very little control and face significant uncertainty. I try to create conditions that allow materials to surprise me. Over time, I begin to understand their tendencies and possibilities.

Craftsmanship is integrity. I work with materials and processes that do not come with a roadmap, so I have to define my own standards. If I put my name on something, it needs to function, last and feel right.
