Born on the volcanic Westman Islands, Guðný Hafsteinsdóttir is influenced by the primal elements of water and fire. The experience of living beside a volcano, on the edge of the sea that was alive with fishing boats and under skies full of birdlife, has left a permanent impression on Guðný. It affects how she approaches her ceramic practice to this day. She is also inspired by Iceland’s rich tradition of storytelling. Her work is characterised by a mix of playfulness, narrative and humour, while taking on themes of nature and the environment. She often combines other materials with clay, such as glass and wood, creating work with a contemporary Icelandic voice.

- Where do you find inspiration?
- My inspiration comes from all over: my surroundings, stories I have heard, nature, local architecture and the people around me. I have a degree in education and teach art at an elementary school. My students are a source of inspiration because of their joyfulness and openness.
- What is special about the materials you choose to work with?
- I use a liquid porcelain a lot. I have always been fascinated with porcelain, especially its whiteness. It has character and can be very difficult to work with. We often say that it has its own memory and if you are not gentle with it, it is unforgiving.
- What might people not normally know about your work?
- I think people do not realise how long the process of making an object is, the steps from an idea to design, to creation. Sometimes you need a few tries before you get it right. But it's also an incredibly exciting process to see an idea come to life.
- What does well made mean to you?
- From my artistic point of view well made must have some emotional or sensual effect on people. But I am also a craftsperson and the object has to meet certain technical and quality standards, and be well executed. The balance between the concept and craft is very important.
