Lacquer, Bamboo, Rattan
These vessels by Muan Hisatomi were woven from madake using traditional Japanese basketry techniques. Future in the Past is a flower offering tray combining a base layer of bundled-strip weaving with a contrasting net-like upper layer in hexagonal plaiting. Melody is a double-walled flower basket made using line construction, with different patterns on each side. Future in the Past reinterprets the form of a celebrated Buddhist offering tray from the Muromachi period, preserved in the Shōsōin Repository in Nara, Japan. Melody contrasts free-flowing curving forms with a strong structural framework, through variations in colour and pattern.
