Mini Wagasa workshop

with Hiyoshiya

Make your own Japanese umbrella

Learn traditional techniques from the last remaining manufacturer of Japanese umbrellas in Kyoto, a unique opportunity to experience an ancient craft first-hand. Brought to Japan from China over a millennia ago, umbrella making flourished for hundreds of years, first as a status symbol and later as a practical. While umbrellas remain widely used, demand for traditional washi paper and bamboo wagasa umbrellas continues to decline. This workshop is one of the many ways Hiyoshiya endeavors to promote an appreciation for the timeless beauty of Japanese umbrellas and pass down the craft to the next generation.
