Paulownia box making workshop

with Tomoya Hyodo

Make your own paulownia box

The workshop will start with a visit of the atelier and a presentation of the techniques and history of traditional wood joinery. Participants will then make a paulownia box using one of these ancient techniques. The steps include assembling the paulownia board with wooden nails and rice glue, scraping it with a hand planer and finally polishing it with tree leaves. No prior woodworking experience is required. After completion, matcha tea is served along with traditional sweets, in a Japanese-style room. The workshop can be booked all year round, except for January, February and March.
