with Abel Mamani

Learn to make Aymara roots instruments and music

Abel Mamani offers a Khantati making workshop at the Aymara art and music school in Iquique. The course focuses on the preservation of the ancestral instrument, the bandola, in order to preserve its continuity over time. Through this immersive experience into the Aymara culture, you will learn about the artisan's secrets regarding the crafting of these instruments. The type of wood used, the thicknesses required, understanding the sanding, or planning the making will all be covered. You can also learn how to play the bandolas, both finger placement and singing. The primary goal is for you to become immersed in this Chilean culture, thereby further strengthening the music passed down by their ancestors.
