Andrea Stahl

Metalworker

Metal welding as a woman

  • Andrea is a self-taught craftswoman and artist
  • Her preferred material is metal
  • She makes practical design objects and sculptures

Andrea Stahl is a self-taught metal welder who learned her art here and there with various craftspeople. She masters many different materials, but it is clear that metal is her favourite and is the one that suits her nature the best. After a simple welding course, she started working independently, making her own furniture and soon enough for other people as well. Self-taught artists are important to Andrea who wishes to see more and more thriving in times to come. Attached to both crafts and art, she is an artist creating sculptures as well as a craftswoman making practical objects that she designs. She is an expert at plasma cutting, estimating her total cutting work at 'many thousands of kilometres' that sometimes follow her into her dreams.

What is it about your work that you love?
That I can create emotions in steel, that I am free and can make a living out of it. It is so versatile to be a businesswoman. I create art that makes people happy, that brings beauty into everyday life and I am very grateful for that.
What got you started?
I needed furniture for my home and wanted to be able to make it myself, so I did. I made a sofa couch and a lamp. People coming over would then ask me where my furniture came from, and that is how I started working as an independent artist and craftswoman.
Is being a woman in welding a challenge?
It has happened at exhibitions that they ask for 'Mr. Stahl' and I, as a woman, was ignored. Or people would ask to see my hands, as if it were not possible that I had made it myself. Sadly, it is still the case that women welding are out of the norm.
What is something people do not suspect about your work?
That when something looks harmonious and good, it sometimes means that there have been several attempts. It takes patience and perseverance to see a piece through to the end, to be truly happy with the final result.
