When two systems collide

  • Louis is inspired by products and environments stemming from our industrial culture
  • In 2020 he won the Young Artisan Creation Award organised by the Ateliers d'Art de France
  • He co-founded the collective workshop Edward Tisson in 2015

Louis Biron, an artisan-designer trained in engraving at the École Boulle, embodies a unique blend of craftsmanship and artistic innovation, influenced by both our industrial culture and contemplation of contemporary complexities. His journey, enriched by photography, theatre and visual arts, has cultivated an environment where art seamlessly intertwines with nature. Inspired by the artistic experiments of Hubert Duprat and Yves Klein's Body Art, Louis merges his passions for craftsmanship and biology to explore collaborative creation processes. He involves living beings such as earthworms or slugs in his work, considering them as co-creators. The resulting drawings serve as the foundation for graphic works integrated into jewellery or intricately crafted metal pieces. These creations are not only visually striking but also deeply reflective of his profound commitment to environmental preservation.

Louis Biron is an expert artisan: he began his career in 2012

INTERVIEW

My artistic practice focuses on staging an imaginary heritage. I present it in the form of fossils, whose shape and surface have been altered by living beings in a way that highlights the paradoxes of our industrial civilisation. I provide new perspectives on how we might envision a more sustainable future.

During my studies, I discovered artist Hubert Duprat's work with caddisfly larvae. This led me to realise that I could merge my interests in craftsmanship and biology by creating collaborative processes inviting Nature to participate in artwork creation.

The first significant piece I co-created is a sculpture that appears as the fossil of a high jewellery necklace. The fissures on its surface result from a bio-integration process involving body painting with various living species.

My art involves collaborating with local living species, driven by ecological and practical considerations. Integrating these organisms requires dedicated time for collection and reintroduction to their natural habitats. Additionally, I collaborate with artisans whose skills complement mine, chosen based on their expertise and proximity.
