  • Preserving traditions in functionality are central to his creative approach
  • He enjoys sharing his knowledge with apprentices

Rennan Villar is a self-taught artisan who embraces a diverse array of crafts, from knife making to jewellery and pipe making. While originally from Brazil, his journey led him to Latvia, where he immersed himself in the rich culture. Rennan feels a profound responsibility to preserve his craft and share his knowledge of Latvian history in a time when masters are becoming scarcer. He also maintains a workshop in his native Brazil. For Rennan, his work is more than art; it serves as a source of tranquility, grounding, and focus. Each creation embodies soul and narrative, whether a statement ring recounting stories or a knife evoking pride for its owner. Additionally, he crafts specialised knives for practical tasks like mushroom picking and potato peeling, showcasing his deep respect for tradition and function.

In what way is your craft linked to the territory?
In my projects, I strive to juxtapose vibrant Brazilian energy with the mysterious allure of Scandinavian and Latvian cultures, employing a blend of contrasting colours, textures and techniques. I try to source local materials as much as possible.
What is a memorable moment in your professional life?
Before arriving in Latvia, I was captivated by a video of Latvian knife maker Jānis Nīmanis. Unaware of his origins, I admired his work. It was only after I moved here that I learned he is Latvian, leading to a newfound friendship between us.
Could your craft be considered in danger?
I hold deep concerns regarding artisans and traditional culture. Craftsmanship transcends mere objects; it is about a love for creation, profound meaning and celebrating aesthetics. When making sales is prioritised over passion, it undermines the very essence of the craft.
What would you suggest to a young artisan in knifemaking?
Making is not just about replicating, it is about understanding. Achieving the perfect knife, for instance, demands a mastery born from the knowledge about its use. Every curve is purposefully placed to optimise comfort and functionality. This philosophy extends to every crafted object.
