Pottery and poetry
- Wenqi incorporates multiple techniques into ceramics
- She spends a lot of time in her research stage
- Her work is a reflection of her personality
Through her creative approach, ceramic artist Wenqi Liu is continually exploring the potential of clay. “My way of working is at the crossroads between a researcher, a designer, an artist and an artisan. I develop my techniques in a non-traditional way, in order to create links between art, craftsmanship and design”. Wenqi first started a career in fashion before she discovered her love for ceramics. Her sensitivity to materials has led her to develop a unique practice, where she develops and integrates different techniques, such as engraving or painting, into her ceramic work. By incorporating these methods into clay, she creates subtle plays of texture and light, complementing the fragile dimension of porcelain with a poetic edge.

INTERVIEW
It was a relatively experimental piece that linked porcelain and embroidery. A piece in which I was able to work in detail by combining these two creative worlds. I am still very happy with this creation.
I started working with ceramics by chance in 2017, initially in the corner of my living room as a hobby. I was firing my pieces at a neighbouring ceramicist's house. Very quickly, I decided to devote all my time to it as I felt an incredible passion for porcelain.
I learned this ceramic in Paris, so there is a strong link between my own personality, my Chinese origins, and French culture in my creations. I also gain inspiration from places, scenes and small details that I can observe while walking around.
My work has long been to look for imperfections and to highlight their beauty. I have never looked for a work that is 'well finished,' but I spend a lot of time on my pieces to bring out the details, to make the viewer see the piece differently depending on where they stand.
