The handwoven rugs The Ninevites produce today are the result of a decade-long collaboration between designer Nkuli Mlangeni and the women-led co-op Karoo Looms, a weavery in the rural village of Prince Albert. Heavy and large, each rug takes 8 to 12 weeks to complete, from dyeing to handweaving. The weavery makes everything to order, ensuring nothing goes to waste, with locally sourced fibres and mohair collected from the Eastern Cape.
Nkuli founded The Ninevites to honour and celebrate the African artisanship and craftsmanship that shaped her childhood. Now, based between Sweden and South Africa, much of the collaboration happens through text, email and video call. This way of working allows Nkuli to champion African design internationally, while ensuring the craft endures and families are supported by the workshop.
