Weaving carpets for modern-day royalty

Hemus is a carpet manufacturer in the small town of Kostandovo in Bulgaria that has been producing wool artwork and preserving the craft of carpet weaving since the late 1990s. The factory was first owned by the state and later passed under private management of the Parpulovi family with the mission to preserve the craft of weaving as a Bulgarian cultural property. More than 1500 carpets have been woven at Hemus, the largest of which took over a year to make.

Experienced artisans produce handmade carpets with a diverse colour palette of over 8,000 shades. Most interesting, however, are the customers of the manufacturer: many castles and royal sites in the UK and France. The reason noblemen queue up here is that it is one of the last remaining places in Europe where such large-scale works of art are made from cotton and wool. One of the most surprising orders came from the British Royal family – an 18-metre long carpet for a summer residence in the UK.
