Made by hand, taken to heart
The candle maker Ester & Erik embodies both the handmade and the cutting edge. First in the world to develop the robot technology needed to thread the wick on the frame, the atelier nevertheless colours and dips all its lights by hand. Ester & Erik selects the highest quality raw materials that ensure the perfect look of the candles while maintaining a thorough sustainable production.
Candle making is an ancient craft born of necessity that evolved into accessory and decor to form an essential part of our lives. The craft behind candles is anything but simple – it is the art of wax alchemy. The development of fragrances to go with the light adds another layer of complexity to the art and craft of candle making.
INTERVIEW
The shape and design of our candles have stayed the same since we started in 1986. They are now part of our DNA and what makes us recognisable. However, our colour palette keeps expanding, and we now offer 90 colours.
Our scented candle designer finds inspiration in our landscape, how the ocean behaves, or the intensity of a pine forest. Inspiration is also found in how we live our lives and what we surround ourselves with. Often he picks one detail and transforms it into a scent.
Paraffin is a mineral extracted from raw oil, and it has the lowest carbon footprint of them all. The quality of the paraffin depends on the amount of oil residue that is left after extraction. Our candles are made from the purest paraffin, which makes for a clean, nontoxic burn.
We created a candlestick privately for ester & erik’s silver anniversary wedding, and it received an overwhelming response. So we decided to adopt it for our collection. This was an aha moment that made it clear how much the personal in our creations touches people.
