Simona Iannini

Lacemaker

The surprising versatility of lace

  • Simona specialises in bobbin lace traditionally made in L’Aquila
  • She enriches the Tombolo Aquilano technique with her own style
  • By using unconventional materials she creates innovative lacework

“The decision to dedicate my life to lacemaking was driven by a mix of passion and youthful recklessness,” laughs Simona Iannini. “When I took my first lessons, at the age of 16, the tradition of L’Aquila bobbin lacemaking had almost disappeared.” After her degree, Simona realised that what she was really interested in was lacemaking, not political science. “What inspired me initially, and still keeps the flame burning, is the possibility of preserving an age-old craft and at the same time applying it in an infinite number of fields, where no one else has dared to venture before,” she says. “I have always been an experimenter, although it took quite some time before people learned to appreciate my contemporary approach to lace.”

Why did you choose this particular technique?
Tombolo Aquilano – the bobbin lace developed in L’Aquila in the 15th century – is the most complex and versatile, and completely different from other historical techniques of the Abruzzo region. For centuries it was highly prized throughout Europe.
What skills are necessary in this craft?
It is not enough to master the technique: lacemaking requires logic and mathematics, creativity and ingenuity, and a great deal of hard work. But the satisfaction that comes with every new project makes the effort vanish!
And what aspect of this craft fascinates you most?
That it is never boring! I am very curious and I like to be constantly challenged. Lacemaking gives me the opportunity to always make something different and innovative. I also love the 'awe' when I finish a piece: the emotions are always intense.
When is a work crafted to perfection in your view?
When it is made with the hands, inspired by the heart, enriched by the mind. The homo faber, the artisan, has the ability to make an object in a unique and artistic way, telling a story and conveying emotions.
Simona Iannini is a master artisan: she began her career in 1984 and she started teaching in 1993
