“The decision to dedicate my life to lacemaking was driven by a mix of passion and youthful recklessness,” laughs Simona Iannini. “When I took my first lessons, at the age of 16, the tradition of L’Aquila bobbin lacemaking had almost disappeared.” After her degree, Simona realised that what she was really interested in was lacemaking, not political science. “What inspired me initially, and still keeps the flame burning, is the possibility of preserving an age-old craft and at the same time applying it in an infinite number of fields, where no one else has dared to venture before,” she says. “I have always been an experimenter, although it took quite some time before people learned to appreciate my contemporary approach to lace.”
