Guided by the clay
- Silvia is a self-taught artisan
- Clay is the perfect material to express herself
- She is influenced by architecture and design
After obtaining a degree in business studies in the UK, Silvia Granata understood that she would never be happy among graphs and numbers. When she arrived home in Italy, she started working as an accountant. In 2007, after taking a Raku pottery course, she fell completely in love with ceramics. Since then, as a self-taught artisan, she has been working in ceramics and porcelain sculpture, alongside the accountancy work. However, at the beginning of 2019, she finally quit her office job and became a full time ceramicist, working both on sculpture and tableware. Today she creates handmade ceramic and porcelain plates, bowls, pots, cups, vases and design objects. "I love the cosy comfortable feeling of a beautiful home, and I wish to fill it with plenty of beautiful objects!"

INTERVIEW
I didn’t choose ceramics, ceramics chose me. The material represents what I am: it’s concrete, real, pragmatic and solidly connected to the ground and to a place that is my home. Just like me.
I am particularly interested in shape and I am attracted to contrasts, like the grey area between white and black. I am also influenced by architecture and design. Ceramics is the tool that allows me to express myself.
I work mainly using the slab technique, I try to get the clay thinner and thinner in order to enhance translucency. The light passes through my tableware which is the characteristic I love the most in porcelain.
My objects are always created leaving something to chance, like a crooked rim or a soft movement in the slab of clay, because I believe that clay itself will guide my pieces and make them unique.
