Claylab
Ceramicist | Bergamo, Italy

Led forwards by curiosity

  • Luca had an initial career in architecture and communications
  • He makes ceramic pieces fuelled by his love of research on glazes
  • His work is commissioned by chefs and ikebana artists, among others

Luca Pedone began his career in architecture, having attended art school and followed architecture studies at the Polytechnic of Milan. At a juncture in his career, Luca took a ceramics course and realised a new path lay ahead of him. In 2013 he opened his ceramics studio in Bergamo. Dedicated to tireless research in materials and glazes, over the years Luca has built up a now renowned workshop, where he creates tableware, sushi sets, cups and vessels. "My tabelware pieces are commissioned by celebrated chefs, and my vessels are used for ikebana compositions," he explains. Luca is very active as a teacher, passing on the craft to new generations through workshops.

How do you feed your inspiration?
With curiosity! I try to understand how things work in every field, including in nature. Everything can give me a starting point. For example, a random fold of paper gave rise to my first vases. Observing water also fuel concepts of fluidity. Sometimes I pick up a stone at the riverside and make a cast of it for my works.
What makes your work recognisable?
What distinguishes my production is my unceasing research on materiality and my desire not to hide raw clay with enamels, but to preserve its nature, even its roughness. I find tactility very important. Organic, soft, fluid forms also define my signature style.
What advice would you give to a ceramicist starting out?
I always recommend curiosity, which I consider the basis of everything. A pragmatic and critical approach to work is also key. I recommend always asking yourself, 'why create a new object? Why these characteristics?' The object must respond to a need.
What do you love most about your craft?
I can no longer exist without having my hands in clay. When I sit at the lathe I enter a sort of meditation. I love being able to create from scratch. My parctice allows me to recover creativity that had previously been set aside, in the years I spent in front of the computer. I feel much more alive and connected. I would never go back.
