Shellegance is a Cape Town-based ceramic atelier founded by artist Lucie de Moyencourt in 2017. The studio produces ceramic sculptures in the shape of shells, made by hand using slab building techniques. Each piece begins as a flat clay form and moves through a defined process of shaping, refining, firing, painting and glaze firing in the studio. Production is limited, as Shellegance releases works only four times a year. The quantities, typically 400 pieces per release, are determined by what the studio can physically produce.

Shellegance operates with a small team consisting of Lucie, Senga and Mi’hlali. Senga is responsible for cutting and shaping the forms. Mi’hlali assists with sanding, cutting smaller elements and packing the kiln. Painting is carried out by Lucie, with multiple shells worked through in sequence. Speed and repetition are built into the process, resulting in variation across the range. Each piece is stamped and sealed to confirm its origin in the Shellegance studio.
