Inspired by Yorkshire landscapes
- James works in clay and bronze
- He holds an MA from the London Royal College of Art
- Deep valleys are the biggest inspiration for his works
Since the moment James Oughtibridge was introduced to clay during an art foundation course at university, there was no looking back. Today, he’s a well-respected ceramic sculptor who creates spectacular objects, many of them slab-built and large-scale for both interior and exterior settings. His works combine a beautiful organic form whilst creating interest up close, with textured and tactile surfaces. James is passionate when describing his work, he simply loves creating objects from clay. “The form of my work plays with light and shadow and allows for further intrigue and perspectives depending on its location, lighting, and position,” he says. His art pieces are characterised by sharp lines and curved planes, a reflection of the undulating Yorkshire landscape where his studio is based. He learned his skills from the celebrated British sculptor David Roberts.

INTERVIEW
I delivered some sculptures, with my late father, to Pinewood Studios. I had been commissioned to make five feet tall vessels for the Bond film, Spectre. My father was my biggest fan and a huge support to me. We were both dazzled by the set and it was such an iconic project to be a part of.
I was lucky enough to be given Ewen Henderson’s large kiln and equipment when I graduated from the RCA. I never met him sadly but that gift played a big part in my early career as it set me up with the one piece of essential equipment that I needed.
I have honed the traditional skills of hand-building and slab-building techniques. I use what I have learned and practised over a number of years to create robust slab-built forms, such as effectively joining many pieces and giving the illusion, through refinement, of one piece.
As far as innovation goes, I am always curious. I approach my sculptures with intrigue. I know in my mind what I wish to achieve and I am always alert to new techniques, aware of innovative ways to shape, hold and manipulate the clay I enjoy exploring different ways to refine the form.
