Sculpting cherished instants

During a period of soul-searching, Nicolas de la Barre d'Erquelinnes discovered craftsmanship, inspiring him to pursue it as a career. This led him to transition from studying management and business to specialising in cabinetmaking and woodcarving at the Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva Foundation in Portugal. Nicolas participated in Homo Faber Young Ambassador programme at Homo Faber in 2022 and 2024, followed by the Homo Faber Fellowship programme in 2025/26. Today, he creates sensual wood sculptures that are deeply connected to relationships with loved ones. Each bust is carved from singular wood block, to evoke a lifelike silhouette.

At Homo Faber 2026, Nicolas will be hosting one of the hands-on workshops supported by Mazda. Grounded in his craft as a woodcarver, the workshop focuses on creating Hanko stamps, a traditional wooden stamp bearing intricate motifs, symbols or words.
