Marcos Costa

Woodcarver

Capturing arid life through sculpture

  • Marcos is a cultural icon in wood sculpting in Pernambuco
  • His art captures life shaped by the drought and hunger in north-eastern Brazil
  • He finds meaning in teaching his craft to help his community thrive

Born into a family of artisans, Marcos Costa learned the craft of wood sculpting by watching his grandfather and uncles carve wood. His wooden sculptures are a striking expression of life in the arid backlands of Pernambuco. His signature pieces of slender dogs and human figurines stand out for their dramatic yet delicate, gaunt forms. “My pieces may be thin and stretched out, but they convey emotion. I am able to show the sadness, suffering or even resilience that can result from living in such an arid region,” says Marcos. Over the years, his workshop has become a centre for training young artisans. “Passing on my craft to people and teenagers who had no other skill is really rewarding for me. Now they are surviving through art, and I find that meaningful,” he says.

How did you first learn the craft?
When I moved to the city for school, I stayed with my uncles and grandfather and watched them carve oxen, horses and donkeys out of wood. They inspired me to try carving and that is how I learned the craft.
What types of wood do you work with?
I work with umburana, a tree native to the dry woodlands and savannas of north-eastern Brazil.
How has your workshop helped others?
There are 12 to 15 people who work with me daily in the workshop, and five or six whom I trained now have their own studios. Today, 20 to 30 people directly benefit from my workshop, which is able to give my small town's economy a little boost.
Do you believe your work leaves a mark?
There have been several times at exhibitions when people get emotional or even cry when looking at my work. I find satisfaction in knowing that my work can impact people and evoke emotion.
