Mobile wilderness
Nehanda Magan came across mobile-making in 2019, when she was asked by her cousin to make an animal mobile inspired by an existing creation. Nehanda found nothing when she went looking for patterns featuring local flowers such as proteas and strelitzias. Her training in industrial design proved the best foundation for the work ahead, as she began sketching them herself. Today, Nehanda Design operates from Woodstock in Cape Town where Nehanda works alongside three artisans, Sibulelo, Zinye and Boniswa, to handcraft mobiles from felt, thread and wood.
The team hand stitches and assembles each piece of felt, that is initially drafted in Illustrator and cut out with a Cricut machine. All of the objects are made to order in an effort to curb overproduction. Nehanda Design donates 20% of every one of their Protect Pangolin Mobile sales to the African Pangolin Working Group. This conservation initiative is dedicated to protecting the world's most trafficked mammal. Next on the horizon, the studio is exploring a range of natural materials aimed at the home, taking the craft that started with a single sketched protea flower into new territory.
