A touch of painted garden

  • Nature themes in muralist format are Mercedes’ signature expression
  • She paints on linen fabric for unique home decor elements such as headboards, curtains and walls
  • Her art evolved from canvas to porcelain to fabric painting over the course of her working life

With pencil or paintbrush, Mercedes Parages Revertera moves across a mural of linen fabric to bring a sketched garden or tropical forest to life. After her studies in fine arts in Madrid, she dedicated 20 years to a career as a realist artist, showcasing nature and bullfighting scenes. She set her artistic work on hold for several years before taking up porcelain painting in 2019, restoring art back into her life. Dinnerware became her new canvas and Mercedes branched out to tablecloth and other upholstery. This is how she was introduced to painting on fabric. From then on, composing for interiors has provided her a limitless opportunity for artistic expression in the form of lush nature on a large scale.

Has family played a special role in your work?
The artistic vein has run in both my paternal and maternal families. I was born into a home that included many family and social gatherings. There was special attention to protocol, elegance, a properly set table and a welcoming decoration. These elements are inherent to my personal style and likely contribute to my passion for designing home interiors.
What are the sources of inspiration for your nature themes?
My nature themes are a recollection of blossomed gardens and my travels to Morocco, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, Perú, and my mother’s homeland – Cadiz. I am captivated by chinoiserie aesthetics and pomegranate, vine, lemon and cherry motifs. Bespoke commissions, on the other hand, are the interpretation of my clients’ own recollections of natural scenery, brought into their home through my unique pieces.
What is your creative process?
I research form and colour first and then start drawing freehand with a pencil. I develop my composition very organically as I move along the linen fabric. Then I sit back to view the piece from a distance before moving to acrylic fabric paint. I can spend up to 10 hours a day to complete a mural piece like a wall triptych or a headboard set.
What lies ahead for you and your craft?
I would like to explore block print and the world of fashion where I could also incorporate embroidery to my work. I will keep working on big format elements like folding screens and wall coverings as I have a new studio with a very high ceiling.
