Melania Crocco

Jewellery maker

Combining cultures

  • Melania launched her brand in the year 2000
  • Her jewellery is inspired by her trips to India, China and Japan
  • Her studio is in the Navigli district of Milan

Melania Crocco decided to create jewellery following her studies in design which was too aseptic for her. Due to her passion for sculpture and painting, she instantly took to jewellery making as it gave her the possibility to merge all her fields of interest into one single object. “By emulating the painter, in fact, I insert textures of colour into the infinite and fascinating universe of precious stones,” she explains. “And like a sculptor, I play in the immensity of three-dimensional space with the aid of wax. After all, a jewel is like a small sculpture or a small painting… For me, creating jewellery has become an intimate necessity, the way in which I express myself.”

What is your atelier like?
It’s a warm environment where those who enter slowly discover the jewels as if in a treasure hunt. It’s inside a typical courtyard of an old Milanese house: there is no flashy signboard but only a perforated M, in line with my low profile style, but always refined even in the smallest details.
Is working in Milan important in your craft?
All my jewellery pieces are born in my atelier or in the workshops of the Milanese artisans with whom I have been collaborating for many years. I am absolutely in favour of a production exclusively “made in Milan” and I try to protect it at any cost.
How would you define your style?
Ethnic Rock! The ethnic inspiration from my travels has now merged with the awareness that I must strive to bring out the intrinsic and original vibration from each material I use. And rock because this is the closest vibration to my soul: strong and decisive.
What aspect of your work do you enjoy the most?
Its unpredictability and the fact that every day is different from the day before. When I create I don't have a routine or schedule, I just have to feel free without mental boundaries. And obviously I must be inspired... it’s a cathartic moment.
