Mathieu Le Traon discovered weaving during a break near Paris, drawn in by the structure of tweed and its ability to translate landscape into cloth. Trained as a geophysics engineer, he began his career in French diplomacy and higher-education institutions. A self-taught weaver, Mathieu trained online with Canadian instructor Jane Stafford and built a practice focused on animal fibres. "My signature pieces convert musical scores into colour sequences using synaesthesia and a readable woven clef," he says. Since moving to Montreal, Mathieu's palette and outlook have been heavily inspired by the city’s light, colour and the St. Lawrence River.
