Ceramicist

Let there be light

  • Lučka designs unique aerated concrete lamps
  • Light has impressed her since childhood
  • Her first piece was a table lamp for herself

Lučka Berlot is an art teacher from Domžale who started designing unique aerated concrete lamps by coincidence. After studying at the Fine Art Pedagogics at the Faculty of Education, she taught art at a primary school. Impressed by the play of lights and shadows, she kept exploring the world of lighting design, which led her to create a table lamp for her room, as she couldn’t find a suitable one to buy. This was back in 2012 and since then she has been exploring different techniques of working with aerated concrete and other ceramic masses, which she masterfully combines with wood, metal and other materials in order to create the perfect illumination. Inspired by natural shapes and textures, she creates various types of lamps under the Lučka Bučka brand.

When and how did you actually start?
It was by coincidence, though lights have attracted me since childhood. I often found myself turning them on and off aiming to create a perfect ambiance. When I couldn’t find a table lamp to suit my taste, I decided to make one. This was in 2012 and it was then that it all began.
Did you learn from a master?
I studied art, which gave me a solid foundation, but it was only after I had made my first lamp that I started exploring the wonderful world of aerated concrete and other natural materials. I attended courses at the faculty of electrical engineering and at the faculty of architecture.
What are your sources of inspiration?
I'm inspired by the roughness and irregularities of natural shapes and textures and by the effect of lights on the ambiance. Since most of my lamps are custom-made, the person that orders the product also co-creates it with their personal story.
What do you love most about your profession?
Lights are the detail in life that subtly caress you. I believe that the warmth they emit changes the whole space and adds life enhancing value. I hand select every detail and carefully consider the production, which results in pieces that improve their surroundings.
