A couple's journey in woodcraft

  • Aljaž and Eva are reviving old knowledge of timber framing and handcrafted woodwork
  • They make functional everyday objects in traditional ways
  • Their workshop has evolved into a vibrant hub, attracting adventurous souls

It was back in 2019 that Aljaž Celarc and Eva Pavlič Seifert made the bold decision to leave behind them the city life and start to live in harmony with nature and nature-friendly practices. They purchased an abandoned wooden house in a remote Karst plateau and started renovating it. Due to financial constraints, they did much of the work by hand, which not only brought them closer to their local heritage but also inspired Aljaž to master the art of woodcarving. In 2021, the Hiša Mandrova project was born, offering diverse workshops such as woodworking, plastering and insulation, regenerative agriculture and gardening. Their mission extends beyond coexisting with nature. Through their workshops, they aim to revive forgotten handicraft skills and pass on their wisdom to a broader audience.

Why did you choose this career path?
Working with wood, we create all our daily essentials from local materials – wooden spoons, tables, cupboards, and even our house and workshop. Our main passion now lies in training others, sharing knowledge and empowering people to embrace traditional woodworking skills.
When and how did you actually start?
In 2019 we bought a farmhouse dating back to 1953, showcasing the splendid traditional timber-framed construction of the region and using local wood, lime, and stone. Captivated by its history, design, and versatility, we embarked on a mission to restore it.
How would you define what you do?
Hiša Mandrova is dedicated to teaching. We offer one and multi-day basic and masterclass workshops in timber framing, natural material construction as well as regenerative agriculture. Our mission is to share knowledge and empower individuals to connect and work with nature.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
By employing traditional hand tools and techniques, we design products that seamlessly integrate modern utility, timeless charm, and contemporary living. Our approach ensures creations that are both nostalgic and perfectly adapted to present-day needs.
