Turning wood into poetry
- Metka believes every piece of wood has its own story
- She is inspired by the beauty and imperfections of wood
- As an art historian she is also inspired by old architecture
Metka Zver is an art historian, so she tried to connect tradition and innovation into an art form that respects heritage while creating a new visual language. Her pieces are the result of the possibilities and challenges posed by her material: wood. Metka's wish is to show the life of the original piece of wood by revealing both its beauty and its flaws, the mistakes and injuries acquired in the course of its growth. The natural warmth of wood and the silky smooth feel of the surface offer a unique tactile satisfaction. Metka loves being creative and playing with new ideas. "Being an artisan is being free to express myself," she claims. She invites us to visit her in the brand new shop she just opened in the beautiful medieval town of Štanjel.

INTERVIEW
My inspiration comes from observing nature and from the energy and beauty of the old architecture that surrounds me. Its textures, colour shades and grandeur.
Is it about finding the right moment when to stop working on a piece. While the wood is on the lathe, the shape emerges and you can quickly spoil everything by going too far. When the shape is perfect, I can feel it in my stomach.
Every piece of wood has its own story. The worm holes talk about the past life, certain colour shades tell us about injuries, frosts, lightning strikes… My wish is to show the story with no words, but by revealing the beauty and flaws of the wood.
My clients are those who appreciate fine craftsmanship and understand the special qualities of the material that I use. Have you ever observed someone holding a beautifully crafted wooden object in their hands? They hold it with respect.
