Playful tales fashioned into ceramics

Luju Pots and Tiles opens a door into a world where nature and imagination meet in clay. Founded by Monique Wilson in northern Eswatini, the atelier is more than a workshop: it is an open-air studio set in the woods, in which pots and tiles are hand-shaped like living stories. Monique, who studied textiles and pottery in Exeter, London and Johannesburg, works alongside artisans Rosemary Sithole, Millicent Mamba and Bhekumusa Shongwe to create colourful, distinctive pieces. Luju means honey in siSwati, a name that reflects the sweetness, warmth and originality of the work they make.

Luju Pots and Tiles draws inspiration from many sources – from Moorish, Majolica, Middle Eastern, Indian and West African traditions to the tongue-in-cheek ceramics of her mentor, Hylton Nel. Each pot or tile is infused with character, humour and cultural references, shaped with patience. Distinct from industrial ceramics, Luju Pots and Tiles’ creations embody sensibility and storytelling, turning everyday objects into art that carries meaning into people’s homes.
