Heritage woven in sisal grass

Since its founding in 1985 by the late Sheila Freemantle, Tintsaba Master Weavers has been transforming basketry into fine art by elevating sisal grass into intricate home décor and jewellery pieces. In Eswatini, sisal comes from the invasive agave sisalana plant and is harvested for its strong natural fibres. The pulp is stripped, spun into threads, hand dyed and woven by more than 420 women in 33 rural groups. Artisans reimagine rust marks, cracks and faded colours as woven patterns that evoke nostalgia, while still maintaining a strikingly modern feel.

Tintsaba Master Weavers artisans create baskets and jewellery rooted in a 400-year-old tradition. The enamelware collection, inspired by a discarded enamel plate found in a front yard, shows how the workshop transforms heritage into contemporary art. Internationally recognised as one of the world’s top weaving manufacturers, Tintsaba Master Weavers, beyond its objects, is about stories. Each piece embodies heritage, nature and the empowerment of women whose skills sustain their communities.
