Keiskamma Art Project

Embroidery

Hamburg, South Africa

Embroidered messages from the Eastern Cape

At Keiskamma Art Project, a team of 60 artisans made up of mostly women, work together to bring empowering embroidered artworks to life. In 2000, Dr. Carol Hofmeyr established the textile studio in South Africa's Hamburg, a humble hamlet where the Keiskamma River reaches the sea. Today, Vuyisile Vuyo leads the studio floor, where the artisans bounce off themes in drawing sessions before transferring designs to large canvases.

Along with partnerships with local and global entities, Keiskamma Art Project artisans work on major large-scale works. The tapestry Our Sacred Ocean was crafted in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature, to document Xhosa ancestral ties to the coast and advocate for marine<< conservation. By mastering the needle and thread, the collective transforms homegrown materials into works that are showcased in international collections, such as Oxford University and the United Nations.
